ABOUT US
Who Are We?
Charlottesville Community Bikes is a non-profit bicycle shop that works with The Virginia Organizing Project (VOP) to promote environmentally-sound transportation, recycle bicycles, and make cycling accessible in Charlottesville, VA. Our shop is volunteer-based, with two paid positions: shop manager & director.
The Community Bike shop emerged out of Charlottesville's Yellow Bike Program. The program, which lasted only a few weeks, entailed about 150 yellow bikes being placed throughout the city for anyone to use at their leisure. Unfortunately theft & damage of the bicycles required that the program be put on hold. The Community Bike Shop allows its patrons to invest energy into a bike that they can keep and offers them how to maintain bikes.
As a local non-profit organization, we rely strictly on funding from private individuals and organizations. Although we primarily work with recycled materials, we do spend money on things such as bicycles tubes. We encourage monetary donations from all that use the shop.
What Do We Do?
At the shop you will find volunteers helping patrons repair their own bikes, build a bike, or teaching mechanic skill classes.
